In common with all DS Audio’s proprietary
pick-ups, the DS-E1 employs a derivative of the
technology it developed along with Microsoft
some 20 years ago – the optical computer mouse.
Inside the DS-E1’s alloy body a miniature LED is positioned between the stylus
tip and cantilever fulcrum, its light output modulated by an extremely fine
optical plate, just 100μm thick, fixed to the rear of the cantilever. This shines on
a photocell which generates an electrical current, directly mirroring the passage
of the stylus through the analogue groove.

The new DS Audio DS 002 optical phono cartridge combines the latest optical cartridge technology with a more budget-friendly price point. Featuring an aluminum cantilever and classic Shibata stylus, the DS 002’s optical screen is positioned closer to the stylus–a breakthrough in phono cartridge design allowing for more accurate reading of the information within the record groove.
Like the more expensive DS Audio cartridges, the DS 002 cartridge body is machined from aluminum and echoes their distinctive design for best optical performance. The DS 002 features an aluminum cantilever and classic Shibata stylus to accurately reproduce the music recorded on the vinyl record album. The DS 002’s optical screen is placed near the stylus tip, together with a newly developed wire-suspension system to hold the cantilever. The new position of the optical screen is a breakthrough in phono cartridge design, providing a much more accurate reading of the groove information and contributing to clearer sound reproduction.

While the latter DS-W1 cleared the maximum 80μm groove pitch and the
most severe +18dB modulation (315Hz lateral cut, re. 11.2μm)
at<1% THD, the Master 1, DS-002 and DS-W2 are secure to
+15dB but mistrack at the maximum +18dB groove modulation.
This is a perfectly acceptable trade-off for the reduced dynamic
compliance of the DS-W2’s ‘tie-wire’ suspension. In practice
then, its 8.1g bodyweight is offset by a low-ish 15/20cu dynamic
compliance, conferring a low ~9Hz subsonic resonance in
medium-to-high effective mass tonearms.

First, to explain the difference of detection principle between the optical cartridge and MM / MC cartridge.
Both the MM / MC cartridge and the optical cartridge read the record groove through the needle, but the usual MM / MC cartridge detects the music signal by vibrating the magnet (or coil) in the magnetic field.
On the other hand, optical cartridges detect music signals by capturing shadow changes (brightness changes) using LEDs and PD (photo cells).
Because MM / MC cartridges generate electricity by cutting off the magnetic field, magnetic resistance always occurs when the magnet (or coil) moves.
However, the optical cartridge detects only the change in brightness (shadow movement), so no magnetic resistance is generated when the vibration system moves.
