The phono stage amplifies the very tiny signal (between a few tens of microvolts and a few millivolts) from the phono cartridge to a line-level (about one volt) signal. This line-level signal can then drive a line-stage preamplifier, just as any other source component would.

The Era Gold REFLEX RIAA Phono Preamplifier A New Milestone In Vinyl Performance
Phono Preamplifier development has virtually stood still since the 1960s. Hi-fi folklore and whimsical notions seem to have taken over from science in an endless regurgitation of ancient designs which only serve to spread confusion in an eagerly receptive market place.
The saying "a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing" was never more apt than it is with vinyl, except few manufacturers heed those words, preferring to meddle at your expense. After all, it is obvious that a dinner plate transformer here and a Teflon board there are bound to lead to the best phono stage since sliced bread. Think again!

Graham Slee Gram Amp 3 Fanfare/Green
A complete dedicated Moving Coil RIAA phono stage in one box plus remote power supply. Suitable for all low output moving coil cartridges between 0.2 and 1.0 mV output. With the high performance you've come to expect from Graham Slee.
It's Been A Long Time Coming It's always been our preferred method to pre-pre-amplify the tiny output of a low output moving coil cartridge and then apply it to the input of a moving magnet sensitivity RIAA phono stage (see the Elevator EXP). This makes perfect sense because there are precious few ways of providing the 60dB plus of gain required, with low noise, low distortion and the level of performance we know you want. Until now.

EAR 88PB Valve Phono Amplifier
EAR 834P was one of the very first standalone phono stages and has become one of our best-selling products. Now the continuing popularity of vinyl has encouraged us to develop an upmarket phono preamp, the 88PB.
Drawing on designer Tim de Paravicini’s vast knowledge of audio electronics, and employing several of the innovations he incorporated in the class-leading The Paravicini 312 Control Centre, a fully-featured preamp and 324 phono stage (both solid state), the 88PB is a definitive statement in valve electronics.

Sugden Masterclass PA-4 (PA4) Phono Amplifier
An amplifier of the most extreme sensitivity with separate moving coil and moving magnet/RIAA gain stages. Facilities include two moving coil stereo input pairs, with variable impedance loading and a single pair of moving magnet inputs. These facilities are selected through precision relays operated via front fascia mounted switches. Designed with a tremendously high headroom they can accomodate cartridges of the most extreme output characteristics.

Graham Slee Jazz Club/PSU1
The concept of adjustable phono equalization is not a new one. When digital signal processing was nothing but a distant futuristic dream recording engineers involved in re-issuing the early masterpieces had to set about the task of equalizing the apparent differences in tonal balance between older records and those of the post 1950's RIAA reproduction standard.
The demand then for such a product was limited to say the least and therefore those engineers had to make their own adjustable equalization phono preamplifiers. One such engineer featured in a 1970's edition of Hi-Fi News & Record Review had made his own adjustable EQ phono preamp. It captured the imagination of Graham Slee and after 30 years of analog disc reproduction research he set about to capture the delights and freshness of what many consider to be dull or brittle sounding junk records.
