A pre amplifier or pre-amp is the very hub of a hi-fi system. All your source equipment connects to the pre amplifier. Most common is an active (powered) preamplifier design but there do exist some passive (non powered) designs. Using a separate pre and power amplifier brings about significant audio improvements over an integrated design as it minimises crosstalk and each component benefits from its own dedicated power supply.

Naim SNAXO 362

In an active system a Snaxo electronic crossover divides the audio spectrum into two or three separate frequency bands, depending on the loudspeaker type employed.
The crossover is connected between the pre-amplifier and power amplifiers. Each power amplifier is then connected directly to the appropriate loudspeaker drive unit, and only handles one frequency band. This allows better control of the drive unit resulting in more accurate music reproduction. As there is no passive crossover no amplifier power is wasted and information loss is minimised.

The introduction of the NAP 500 in 2001 brought with it a new level of technical and musical performance. A Naim design project group began reviewing the existing pre-amplifier designs exploring possibilities for major design improvement over the existing reference pre-amplifier, the Naim NAC 52.

The NAC 252 descends from the NAC 52 - still one of the finest pre-amplfiers ever manufactured. It brings both control and connectivity advances over the NAC 52, and a significantly enhanced construction, aesthetic and finish. Improved earthing arrangements have resulted in an entirely new circuit topology, built upon a single very high quality, anti-resonance main audio circuit board. Ten independently regulated power supplies are fed from the matching Super-Cap power supply.
