A pre amplifier or pre-amp is the very hub of a hi-fi system. All your source equipment connects to the pre amplifier. Most common is an active (powered) preamplifier design but there do exist some passive (non powered) designs. Using a separate pre and power amplifier brings about significant audio improvements over an integrated design as it minimises crosstalk and each component benefits from its own dedicated power supply.

Constellation Audio Performance Series - Perseus Phono Pre Amplifier
Fully complementary circuitry:
The Perseus's balanced audio circuitry is essentially two mirror-imaged preamp circuits, one to amplify the positive half of the audio signal, the other to amplify the negative half. The fully balanced design cancels the effects of interference-an important capability considering the low level of the signals inside a phono preamp-and also increases slew rate and frequency response.

Constellation Audio Performance Series - Virgo III Pre Amplifier
Chassis-width, triple-transformer power supply:
The Virgo power supply design is borrowed directly from the Reference Series Altair preamp. This triple-transformer supply offers separate, isolated feeds for the left and right channels, as well as a separate feed for control circuits. Because each channel of audio cannot be affected by the power demands of the other (or of the control circuits), maximum sonic purity is achieved. The power supply now stretches the full width of the preamplifier, so the preamp section can sit directly atop the power supply.

Constellation Audio Inspiration Series - Preamp 1.0
Triple-transformer power supply:
The design of the power supply in the Inspiration borrows heavily from the Altair II and Virgo II. We chose R-core transformers to power the audio circuits because of their inherently low noise and low radiated magnetic energy -- and because they worked so well in our previous designs. There are separate R-core transformers for left and right channels. A conventional EI transformer powers the control circuits, so the sensitive audio circuits are well-isolated from the noise of the control circuits.

Audio Research Reference 10 Line Stage Pre Amplifier
In 2010 Audio Research announced the Reference Anniversary preamplifier, a special limited edition product commemorating their 40th anniversary. It was acclaimed by many as the finest preamplifier available and a fitting tribute to all of the classic Audio Research products that were introduced during the forty years that preceded it. Included in the Reference 10 are critically chosen new components, proprietary custom-made capacitors, wiring, and new connectors that cumulatively provide a level of performance never before achieved. Key Audio Research design traits remain: The signal path is fully discrete, all-tube, pure Class-A, with zero feedback. Other attributes and choices remain, too: Each unit is completely hand-soldered and hand-constructed in our Minnesota facility using the finest materials, with major components such as custom transformers, plated-through circuit boards, and casework sourced locally. All engineering is performed in-house.

Audio Research Foundation LS28 Line-Stage Pre Amplifier
LS28 - Line Stage Preamplifier
The LS28 line stage is a flexible and intuitive preamplifier. Four balanced and four single-ended inputs, and two sets of both balanced and single-ended outputs, allow maximum connectivity. The straightforward menu allows control of numerous parameters, including input naming, tube hours, auto shutdown, and home theater passthrough. Phase invert and mono are also standard functions. At the heart of the LS28 are four 6H30 vacuum tubes in the analog circuit. While the LS28 is the perfect match for any Audio Research amplifier, it has been designed to work with nearly any amplifier on the market today.

Jadis JP80MC Pre Amplifier
The Jadis JP80MC is the most well known preamplifier made by Jadis. Built with 4 line, 1 MM and 1 MC input the JP80MC will allow you to connect any analog sources you migh want to use. The phono stage will accept all type of cartriges even the ones with a very low impedance. Also, the power supply is over sized and separated in order to preserve the fragile audio signal. Enormous technical effort were made to develope this peace of equipmentand these efforts had only one purpose: the ambition of biulding the best preamplifier in the world.

Jadis JPS3 Pre Amplifier
Phono preamplifier with separate power supply.
This Jadis includes an MM and MC phono preamplifier that uses three ECC83 for MM and 2 6DJ8 for the MC stage.
As for the JPS2, its specific power supply recreates a voltage for the module with a 80 Hz frequency in order to avoid problems that can occur due to the 50 or 60 Hz frequency from the mains supply. The high voltage is regulated by two tubes: 1 x EF86 and 1 x EL84.

Jadis JPS2 Pre Amplifier
The Jadis JPS2 is a line preamplifier which uses 3 ECC83 for the line function plus a ECC82 tube to adapt the impedance on the CD entry. Its specific power supply recreates a voltage for the module with a 80 Hz frequency in order to avoid problems that can occur due to the 50 or 60 Hz frequency from the mains supply.
The high voltage is regulated by two tubes: 1 x EF86 and 1 x EL84.

Jadis JPL MK II Pre Amplifier
Built in stereo preamplifier, the JPL includes 5 line imputs and one tape with monitoring.
The JPL will bring you an inherent sense of dynamic gradation, but also soundstage transparency and mastery over the elements of spatial resolution.
I never felt that the Jadis was holding back or blunting the power and rise-time of orchestral peaks. I've never heard a preamp so convincingly delineate the dynamic range from soft to very loud.
This is one of those rare products guaranteed to dramatically improve your system. Be prepared for a dynamic eruption that will nudge you much closer to the illusion of live music.
