Wood A Model
The SPU Wood A features a distinct and outstanding housing made of Japanese Beechwood, famous for its strength and hardness. For the exclusive surface treatment, the 6000 years old Japanese Urushi lacquer method was chosen in order to achieve a hard, resistant and beautiful multilayer surface in dark maroon colour. The wooden housing has a strong influence resulting in a very pleasant, open, dynamic, straightforward and present tone range characteristic for the SPU sound.
SPU Series
New possibilities in regards to housing materials, diamonds and magnetic & damping systems have been employed to improve the SPU and its performance, whilst at the same time remain faithful to the original concept. A key SPU feature is an integrated headshell, designed to mount directly into classic tonearms with detachable headshells.
Quite simply, there is no finer compliment to a classic tonearm with a detachable headshell than an Ortofon SPU. Today the SPU still has a sound that is definitely its own and it enjoys a remarkable following - in particular among audiophiles whose systems are comprised of vintage valve equipment and horn or reflex speakers.
Mounting
All SPU-cartridges are designed to bring optimum performance, when the tonearm mounted with the cartridge is adjusted parallel to the record surface, at recommended tracking force. When an antiskating adjustment is possible, Ortofon recommends a 50% higher value, when using SPU-cartridges with the Ortofon Replicant stylus, compared to normal setting at recommended tracking force.
Upgrade Path
Ortofon offers the APJ-1 adaptor for SPU A-shell type cartridges available separately. The APJ-1 adaptor extends SPU A-shell models to standard GM-length. The SPU Wood A mounted on the APJ-1 adaptor ensures the ability to mount the cartridge in a wider range of tonearms with universal (SME) mount e.g. Ortofon TA-110 and TA-210 tonearms. The combination of SPU Wood A, ST-7 Moving Coil transformer and TA-110/TA-210 tonearms gives a supreme experience.
